The Confident Mother

Helping ambitious women in technology manage their career with confidence and purpose

11th August 2015

7 secrets from the world of neuroscience

The Confident Mother is about celebrating and loving life as a woman and as a mother. I help you create a feeling of confidence as woman and as a mother. Wellness is one of the five elements that you need to pay attention to in the Confidence Circle. The others being: work, contribution, family, and feminine.

Wellness is about the health of your body AND the health of your mind.  These 7 secrets from neuroscience will help you develop and nurture a healthy mind for optimum growth and success, regardless of whether you have a career or you’re running your own business or you are a stay at home mum.

1 – Good quality sleep

One bad night’s sleep makes us grumpy or moody. The average person needs 8 hours. Yes, I know many mums cope with much less. However do get as much undisturbed sleep as you can. If that means going to bed earlier, then that’s what it takes. You will feel so much better when you have good quality sleep on a regular basis.

2 – Play

Have fun or do something playful every day to stimulate the dopamine release.  A short burst of dopamine stimulates your motivation. Try dancing to happy music, enjoying a pillow fight with your children, or watching a comedy programme. Do something fun or joyful every single day. Build it into your daily routine.

3 – Downtime

Make time in your life for regular relaxation and downtime when you have the intention of doing nothing. Be spontaneous – read a book, flick through a magazine, enjoy a cup of tea – just sit and relax.

4 – Social connection

As human beings, from a very young age, connection to others helps us to feel secure. Go out there and talk to people; get involved in your local community; network – either face-to-face or online. Those of us who are introverts will need to time to recuperate after a large social gathering however regular social connection is essential.

5 – Altered state

Neuroscience studies tell us that long-term mindfulness and meditation practice are linked to increased attention & emotional regulation. You only need to practice this ‘altered state’ for 10 minutes every day. It is believed that daily meditation can help to improve memory, empathy, sense of self, and stress relief. Try it and see.

6 – Physical activity

Moderate regular exercise reduces stress and maintains brain health. We’ve all heard that 30 minutes of exercise three times a week improves your physical health, however you will also see benefits to your mental or brain health. A daily brisk walk of just 15-20 minutes will do wonders for your creative thinking and decision-making. What have you got to lose by trying it? At the worst, you’ll feel physically fitter.

7 – Focus time

Our brains work more effectively when you make time in your day to be truly focused without distraction or interruption. This focus time will supports your pre-frontal cortex which is the part of the brain that does the creative thinking and the decision-making. However at times it can get overloaded and you experience a sense of overwhelm.

I absolutely believe that it is essential to pay close attention to your overall wellness: your mind as well as your body.  I encourage all my clients to adopt a healthy mind for optimum growth and success. Try these 7 neuroscience secrets and discover how much more you can achieve when you have increased clarity, focus and creativity.

Let me know which of these 7 secrets you will practise more frequently to develop your mind wellness.
