Database Manager to Product Development
This week’s business startup story is from Dorota Dyk who has created a product, MEDAPTI, to help parents to give medicine more safely to their babies.
How did you get started?
I came up with the idea of MEDAPTI when I struggled to give medicine to my children when they were babies. I found 15 types of medicine dispensers: soft syringes, dummy dispensers, syringe bottles and many more but none were good enough. Some were too messy, some too difficult to use, some not suitable for babies that don’t take dummies or bottles, some simply ineffective. That’s when I came up with MEDAPTI. It’s an adapter for oral syringes that is a simple solution to all the problems outlined above.
How old is your business?
My MEDAPTI project is still at the development stage therefore I’m not trading yet, although it feels like a second ‘job’ (incredibly exciting and enjoyable job though) :-). I have been working on it for just over three years. My daily job at the moment is Database Manager.
Tell us more about your product
MEDAPTI will make giving medicine safer and easier. It’s a simple solution that could help so many, not only babies and parents or carers but also premature babies, the ill, the disabled and the elderly.
It’s an adapter for oral syringes that directs medicine to the cheek, which prevents choking. It is soft and so protects mouth and gums. It is simple, mess free and it gives more control, safely positioning the syringe in the right place. Plus it only requires the use of one hand to dispense the medicine!
What do you love about your business?
What are the challenges?
I have struggled to finance the development of my idea and juggling the time between daily, job, kids and MEDAPTI project.
What do you wish you’d known at the start?
I wish I knew more about social media.
Top tips for other mums thinking about starting a business
It’s really hard for me to answer this as MEDAPTI is still at the development stage so I’m no expert. From what I have experienced so far:
- stick to your gut feeling
- do your research
- and ask yourself: “Do I really believe in my idea?”.
Finally – accept help. If you are offered help, don’t try and do everything on your own.
How do you look after yourself
I try and have an afternoon/evening off with no work and no kids when I can watch a film, have a pamper evening, etc. although it’s becoming less frequent. I always try to go to mums nights out too!
How can we find out more?
Thank you Dorota!
