Do you dream of having a successful business? Being known as an expert authority? Invitations to talk on Oprah’s couch or on BBC News? Do you really know how big you can be?
So many women have dreams and aspirations for their business but they are not backing up those dreams with the self-belief or the action taking that it requires. And very often if the action-taking, if the positivity, if the decision-making is not happening when and how it should be, strip back a few layers, and you’ll find that underneath, there is a lack of self-belief. Over the weekend, I have been reading The ONE Thing by Gary Keller.
I have enjoyed this book because firstly he preaches focussing on the ONE thing … whatever that ONE thing might be for you in that moment, on that day, that week, that month, that year, in that five year plan … And I love this approach. It’s an approach I use when I work with clients. It’s an approach that I am nurturing for Clear Confidence. It’s an approach that has served me very well.
However … so often, even when we KNOW what our ONE thing for that day is, we don’t always do it. We get distracted. We procrastinate. We get interrupted. An emergency crops up. But actually often these are smoke screens because we don’t believe in ourselves. We are scared of big success. We worry that we’ll become unlovable. Or that big success means having to work really hard every day all day and we don’t want sacrifice our family at the expense of our business. Unbelievably sometimes we actually sabotage our own success. We put barriers in the way.
The truth of the matter is … you will be as BIG as you believe you can be. Gary Keller tells us that “Thinking big is essential to extraordinary results”. I read the chapter on Lie No 6: Big is Bad while I was at my daughter’s dance lesson. Oh my goodness. This chapter has SO inspired me. Whereas previously I was thinking I want to work with 100s of women. I want 100s of women to feel more confident, to feel more powerful, to do something amazing in this world ….. I could literally feel the BIGness inside of me growing as I read the chapter.
I don’t just want to help 100s of women. I want to help millions. I don’t just want to appear on BBC Radio … I really do want to be interviewed on Oprah’s couch. I want to be the next BIG thing for inspiring and motivating women. I know who my ‘role models’ are. Now I need to do more research so that I very quickly learn to be like them in terms of their success and their profile; so that my events attract 100s and 1000s of women. I want my one day event to be THE event of the year. I want Kate Middleton to be calling me for a VIP ticket.
It’s not just about ‘dreaming’. It’s also about making decisions, taking action and working hard. Everybody can work hard and we all have the same number of hours in the day. The difference is when you work hard on your ONE thing. That’s how you get extraordinary results and that’s when you know how big you can be. Don’t let yourself get boxed in ….
” … what you do in the time you work determines what you achieve. And because what you do is determined by what you think, how big you think becomes the launching pad for how high you achieve. Don’t fear big. Fear mediocrity. Only living big will let you experience your true life and work potential.”
How big can you be? And if you’re not sure how to get started, join me for The Confident Mother online conference. I have speakers from Judith Morgan, The Small Business Oracle, discussing today Creative self-employment for confident mothers to Fi Feehan last week who explored how to Find your true purpose. Tomorrow, Vanessa Anstee will share her journey in business and How she learned to trust her intuition and change business direction.
Taking massive and positive allied to a goal is a definite way to get things moving in the right direction and actually making it happen!
Thanks Garth.
