Last week I told you that instead of New Year Resolutions, I’m going to focus on a different aspect of my life every month in 2020.
I’ve borrowed this concept from Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project. It’s The Confident Mother’s book club read for January-February.
It’s not that I’m unhappy. Far from it. I’m a happy person and I love life.
However I enjoyed reading how Gretchen focussed on a different aspect of her life each month and thought I’d benefit from this too.
How to decide what to focus on
First – decide what to focus on each month.
January was easy – health and fitness.
I am out of shape. I have a marathon to run in April. Clearly in order to run the marathon and feel happy before, during and after, I need to get fit.
At the end of the month, I’ll let you know how I get on with my January health and fitness goals.
The challenge for me was to identify what else to focus on during 2020.
It took me a while.
And I used Gretchen as inspiration when I got stuck.
12 things to make me happier
In the end, this is what I’ve decided:
- January – Health & fitness (for the reasons above)
- February – Love & marriage (well it is Valentine’s Day on 14 February)
- March – Wealth (because abundance is my intention for 2020)
- April – Space (who doesn’t love a good declutter)
- May – Learning
- June – Mindfulness
- July – Creativity
- August – Fun
- September – Family
- October – Making a difference
- November – Friendships (not sure about this one still, it may change)
- December – Gratitude
Every time an idea pops into my head about Space or Mindfulness, I jot it down in a notebook. So that when I get to the relevant month, I’ll have some thoughts on how or what to focus on.
And I’ve created my own version of the Resolutions Chart setting out my resolutions and goals for the month.
What will make you happier in 2020?
The Happiness Project is a good read and I’m looking forward to discussing it with The Confident Mother online book club next month.
Gretchen suggests you set up an accountability group to help you stick to your monthly resolutions. Instead I’m going to get public accountability by blogging about my success.
So what about you? What will make you happier in 2020?
Do leave a comment – I’d love to hear your thoughts on what will make you happier in 2020.
