3 important lessons about jobhunting after redundancy

Given the current economy, lots of organisations are making redundancies so I thought this is a good time to share 3 important lessons about jobhunting after redundancy.

These are things I wished I’d known when I got made redundant a few years ago and that I have learned since.

1 – People want to help but often don’t know how so you need to tell them what help you’d like.

  • Perhaps an introduction to an employer or company?
  • Feedback on your CV?
  • Coffee catch up so you can articulate how you’re feeling?
  • Zoom call so you can practice job interview questions?

What would be most helpful right now?

2 – It’s so much easier to find the next role when you have clarity about WHO you are – your key skills and strengths.

I cannot stress this one enough.

If you don’t yet have a clear idea on what you’re good at and what you want from the next role, it’s going to make it harder. Not just to find the right roles but to land the job at the interview.

When you have that clarity, your inner confidence and self-belief shine through.

3 – You can use the redundancy as an opportunity to pivot your career or set up your own business IF you have the confidence and self-belief.

That’s what I wanted to do when I got redundant back in 2009 but I didn’t (yet) have the confidence or self-belief.

If this is something you’re thinking about, what are your transferable skills? What would your dream job include?

In hindsight, the advice to my younger self when I first thought about a pivot, is to invest in a coach to help you build your confidence and self-belief. I did get there three years later, but now I look back and wonder “as that three years wasted?”
