Today I’m going to share with you 5 simple ways you can take practical action to fast track your career success.
1 – Ask for opportunities
The first suggestion for you is to ask for opportunities which allow you demonstrate your skills, values and experience. OR opportunities that give you ways to improve or develop new skills and experience.
There are lots of ways you can do this and here are a few ideas for you.
- Ask to be included in high profile projects or initiatives that allow you to demonstrate your existing skills or to learn new ones.
- Get involved with industry organisations or networking groups by volunteering to organise or facilitate or speak.
- Seek out secondment opportunities – either internally or find out whether your organisation has a policy on external secondments.
- Talk to your manager and ask about what other opportunities to learn new skills exist.
- Volunteer with a charity and develop new skills or use existing skills in a different way.
2 – Get support from others
Everyone needs a good support team around them. As human beings who need connection and want to be liked, we tend to aspire to those around us. We reshape our behaviour depending on who we are with.
When you surround yourself with smart, talented, ambitious women who take brave action, set clear boundaries and bold risks, you will grow in confidence and courage so that you do the same.
You need people who will inspire you to take bigger, bolder action. Who will encourage you and lift you on the days you’re just not feeling it. Who will tell you to ‘go for it’ when you’re doubting yourself. Who will challenge you to apply for that promotion. Who will cheer you on when you land your dream job.
If you don’t feel you have the right support now, you’ll love what you get inside the Career Catalyst and how that will impact your career success.
3 – Work with a coach
Working with a coach is one of the most impactful ways of fast tracking your career success. You can invest in your career by working with a coach like me on a one-to-one basis or join a group coaching programme such as the Career Catalyst.
A career coach will help you get clarity on what exactly your career goals are – in other words, what does career success look like to you. Then your coach will support you to identify HOW you will achieve career success. That means getting crystal clear in your thinking in what actions you will take and when.
When you work with a career coach, you will break out of your comfort zone so that you have the confidence and courage to take bigger, bolder, braver risks to progress your career.
4 – Use your network
Many of us are brilliant at building networks and nurturing relationships.
But when somebody suggests ‘use your network’ to fast track your career success, it feels awkward or worse, manipulative.
If that’s how you feel, what would you say if someone approached you and asked for help?
Using or leveraging your network is simply about making life easier for yourself.
- Ask for introductions.
- Go to networking events.
- Ask to connect with people on LinkedIn.
- Request feedback from others in the industry on your CV or LinkedIn profile.
- Ask for reading or podcast recommendations.
- Organise virtual or in real life coffee catch ups.
Using your network to fast track your career success can be simple and straightforward. You’re asking for a small favour, knowing that you’ll be happy to return the favour in the future or to pass on the kindness to someone else in the future.
5 – Create clear boundaries
One of the most important ways to fast track your career success is to ensure that you prioritise your physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.
That means creating clear boundaries.
It’s essential that you look after yourself first so that everything you do, works for you. Nobody else will do this for you. Your organisation might have a brilliant wellbeing policy, but you are responsible for you.
The reason clear boundaries are important to your career success is that boundaries ensure that you have more clarity and more confidence. Boundaries mean that you are more creative, more productive and make better decisions.
The end result is that you will make a bigger impact at work which allows you to confidently fast track your career success.
