I have always been fascinated by people and what makes us tick. How we work, how we communicate, how to motivate, how to inspire, how to challenge are different for every person that you meet. In the past I have studied Myers-Briggs, Belbin Team Roles, and De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats. DISC is the personality profiling tool that I use in my coaching work. I love the insight you gain about yourself and others.
So what is DISC? Think about the people you know – there are two ‘basic’ types of people: the outgoing and the more reserved. Within those two types, we tend to be task or people-oriented.
This sets the scene for four styles:
D-Driver outgoing and task-focussed (driven, determined, doer)
I-Influencer outgoing and people-focussed (impulsive, influencing, independent)
S-Steady reserved and people-focussed (sincere, stable, steady)
C-Compliant reserved and task-focussed (consistent, creative, critical thinker)
A full DISC Profile Analysis will highlight which of these styles are strongest in you. Many of us will be a blend – for example I am C-D. I like accuracy, detail, structure, consistency, high quality and I am determined, driven, and a doer. My motto: “Do it right and do it now”.
What is great about DISC is that if we understand our own strengths, we have a better appreciation for how we communicate and how we like people to communicate with us. We can understand and be more accepting of why some people ‘need’ the detail while others just want to get it done. We can appreciate what frustrates or motivates others and then apply this knowledge to the way we behave at work as well as at home.
Fascinating, isn’t it? What about these famous names: Lance Armstrong, Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Margaret Thatcher?
