The Confident Mother

Supporting parents on their breastfeeding and infant feeding journeys

4th January 2025

How do I know when it’s ok to call an NCT breastfeeding counsellor?

When is it OK to call an NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor?

This is an article that was written for the NCT Bromley & Chislehurst branch newsletter a few years ago. I thought it might be helpful to share here.

It’s OK to call an
NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor …
We are mothers who have breastfed. We are volunteers and have been trained in counselling skills as well as breastfeeding.
It’s OK to cry or get upset …Breastfeeding can be emotional. Don’t worry if you get upset or start to cry. We absolutely understand and you certainly won’t be the first.
It’s OK if you’re not the birth mum …NCT Breastfeeding Counsellors welcome calls from Mums, Dads or other supporters. Often it’s the partner who calls us because they don’t know how else to help.
It’s OK to not breastfeed …We respect your decisions and choices, no matter how you are feeding your baby.
It’s OK to ask a question or have a concern …NCT Breastfeeding Counsellors provide information and support, using evidence-based research, so that you can make informed decisions.
It’s OK to want to talk things through …NCT Breastfeeding Counsellors support you by listening as well as answering specific questions or concerns you might have.
It’s OK to call the NCT Infant Feeding Line …The NCT Infant Feeding Line is open every day (even bank holidays) from 8am to midnight. Call on 0300 330 0770.
It’s OK to call …NCT is a charity. However apart from the cost of the telephone call to the NCT Infant Feeding Line, there is no additional charge. You don’t need to be an NCT member either.
It’s OK to get in touch at any stage …Your baby might be 6 days, 6 weeks or 6 months old. There is no time limit.

You are invited to get in touch as often as you need, no matter how you are feeding your baby.
It’s OK to leave a message …You may need to leave a message if you contact an NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor directly.

The support we provide, often as a volunteer, fits in around family and work.
It’s OK to visit a local Baby Café …Visit the NCT website for the up-to-date list of support available in the Bromley & Chislehurst area.
