Supporting parents on their breastfeeding and infant feeding journeys

How to develop your resilience walking the Camino

Earlier this year I told you how I set a goal to be a co-leader on a walking holiday in Spain.

It all happened much faster than I expected. It happened because I was clear on my goal and then set baby milestone steps. AND I had public accountability because I told everyone I knew!

First I found out what was required to become a co-leader.

Then I trained to get my bronze navigation certificate.

Next I found a flat in Spain and spent time living alone to improve my language skills.

I came home for a weekend before setting off on the last phase which was to co-lead a walk on the Camino setting out from Santiago de Compostela on 1 May arriving in Fisterra on 5 May, then Muxia on 7 May.

I walked in total 95 miles over 8 days, including time walking around Santiago and Muxia at the start and finish.

But oh my – the weather!

I’ve never been SO wet. The first 3-4 days included horizontal rain, torrential rain, thunderstorms … then the last 4 days were more what I’d dreamed of. Sunshine over beautiful coastal views.

But wow, what an experience.

A few learnings about resilience:

  • The resilience required to keep walking makes you realise you’re a lot stronger than you think.
  • Remember, always, no matter how hard it is (or how much water is squelching in your shoes), this too will pass.
  • Support from others on similar journeys will get you through – whoever was having a bad day was lifted by one of the other 6 women in the group.
  • Look for and celebrate the bright moments, even in the pouring rain.
  • Never be afraid to try new things – whether that’s razor clams (navajas) or living on your own in Spain. You will survive.
  • My first poncho was a cheapo that I’d never needed to use in two years. But the rain and wind was so extreme that it tore. I was so grateful to find a shop where I could buy a replacement – having the right tools, equipment and resources makes a huge difference.
  • When you have a goal (to reach Muxia), don’t focus too much on the detail, but just focus on the next step, and the step after that. The miles soon fly by.
  • Be aware of what you need to be the best version of you. I’m an introvert. I needed time by myself to replenish my energy each day.
  • It’s possible to have fun and keep smiling even when the weather forecast is even worse than today.

Now if this is making you think “I’ve got a tough challenge ahead and I need someone in my corner to help me identify my strengths, equip myself with the right resources and lift me up when I’m feeling down”, reach out to someone for support.

Find someone that you like, trust and respect, to be your coach, mentor or cheerleader.

And if you think that’s me, let’s talk.
