The Confident Mother

Helping ambitious women in technology fully unlock their leadership potential

6th November 2015

Top 3 things you need to do today

If you want even more success and confidence in your career or your business before 2015 is finished, here are my top 3 things that you need to do today.

1. Do something scary

My current motto is Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. My coach had mentioned this Susan Jeffers book so many times that eventually I got the hint and bought a copy. Seriously. Do something scary. Feel the fear and don’t hold back. Whether your fear is around applying for a job, reaching out to a former work colleague for a testimonial, or telephoning potential clients. Just do it. What’s the absolute worst that could happen. Don’t feel that you have to do things the way that everybody else does them. Free yourself from the fear. Accept that you will be anxious, fearful, worried, stomach churning … and do it anyway.

I was worried about changing the branding on my newsletters, and moving my blog. I was even more scared when it came to signing up to swimming lessons. But I did it anyway. So often when we push ourselves, it turns out to be easier than we expected. The longer we put “it” off, the bigger and scarier it can get. Free yourself from the fear!

2. Push your comfort zone

Every time you push your comfort zone in one area of your life, it stretches the comfort zone in all areas. Do push yourself and do something different. Do something you’ve always wanted to do. Go on an adventure. Learn flamenco, join a chorus, sign up for a 10k race, or commit to the success of your business by joining me on The Confident Mother Experience in deepest Kent. Could this be the adventure you’re looking for?

3. Say no

OK yes, I get it – this sounds contradictory to no 1. But what I want you to do is to really think about the things that you do because you ‘should’; because somebody else asked; because nobody else will. Be strong and say no. Saying no to what you don’t want to do is an important step in self-love and valuing who and what you are. It’s ok to say no to a client that you don’t feel is a good fit. It’s ok to say no to running the beer tent at the school fireworks night. It’s ok to say no to taking on an extra project when you don’t have time to focus on your current ones. When you say no to the things you don’t want to do, you will have more confidence to say yes to the things you do want to do.

In summary, the 3 top things you  need to do today to achieve even greater success and confidence in your career or business in 2015: do something scary, push your comfort zone and say no.

Very clear Sherry, & very timely, especially as some people feel they’re on ‘wind down’ to Christmas holidays. I’m loving the ‘new me’, in saying “no” to people – even my family sometimes.
The doing scary things is hard, but important. I’ve done so much outside my comfort zone this last 6 weeks, but I’m so energised by it, I know it’s the right thing to do. I have signed up to a 10K in February, even though I’m not at stage of running 5k regularly yet. Scary, but exciting!
Loving your blog, posts & all round support & encouragement 🙂

No can be SO liberating. Good for you.As for the 10k – you have LOADS of time to get up to that distance. My beginners take 10 weeks to 5k; then it’s about consistency.

Love your motto and your article! Especially the part about stepping outside your comfort zone and doing what you’re afraid of. It’s great advice!

Thanks Tamara. The more you step out of your comfort zone, the more you can.
