The Confident Mother

Supporting parents on their breastfeeding and infant feeding journeys

9th July 2017

What’s your big dream?

How do you respond when somebody asks you “What’s your big dream?”

Maybe your big dream is to own a desert island. Or create a successful digital magazine. Perhaps you would just love to have a smallholding somewhere off-grid and live off the land. Or maybe you want to make your fortune and retire as a millionaire by the age of 40.

A couple of days ago, fellow female entrepreneur, Victoria Casebourne, asked me …. “What’s your big dream?”

What she didn’t know is that a few days earlier, another entrepreneur had asked me “What do you want to do Sherry? What’s your big why?”

I want to change the world

And when I said “I want to change the world“, she responded ….

“That’s very big. Take a step back – what do you want to do before that? I don’t really understand what you do. It’s just not clear“.

I’ll be honest. I was flummoxed. Flustered. Confused. A step back. Do something less? “Not very clear“. Her comments sent me off into a spin because I thought that I was very clear on what I do, who I help and what I offer.

But I had answered honestly in response to the question “What do you want to do?”

So I asked a few friends, colleagues and clients “If you had to tell somebody else what I do and who I help, what would you say?”

What I do and who I help

Here are a few of the responses:

  • a coach who specialises in helping women to feel confident about their place in the world
  • help mums get confident about returning after maternity break and help corporate women get confidence to climb the career ladder
  • help women get back into work after having children or a career break
  • helps women who want to get back into working after having kids. She helps with confidence and strategies. She also helps women who may want to change jobs / careers and coaches them through it all. She knows a lot about LinkedIn. She has loads of free resources on her website which are well worth exploring
  • Sherry helps working mothers, both business owners and employees maximise their potential in their business or workplace
  • Confident mother; return to work mentor for mum; business mentor for women

That made me feel SO much better. (Thank you to everybody who helped me out).

When Victoria asked “What’s your big dream?“, at first I was reticent about replying or replying honestly. I have a BIG dream but what’s the point of having a big dream if it’s not, well big.

Here’s my big dream …

My big thing is I want to rule the world. OK I know that’s big and actually it’s not ruling the world, I want to change the world. I want equality for women but it’s more than that. I want more than equality. I want women to rule the world because I know we’ll do a better job.

I have a REALLY strong calling to be a leader for women. I can’t describe it any other way. I want to show women the way so that together we can rule the world. To support that dream … to make that happen, I want my own TV channel and TV show. Something like Oprah. I want to be sat on a sofa every week or every night interviewing amazing women.

My other dream …

To help this happen, I want to set up and create a beautiful countryside conference & retreat centre that I can use for The Confidence Experience (my VIP days) as well as workshops, coaching etc. I will live in or near the grounds of the centre; it is surrounded by woodland and fields, with a lake nearby.

I can picture the building. Symmetrical. Grey stone. Light. Bright airy. Available for hire.

In Kent and therefore good transport links.

Finally, a pet crow

Finally I want a pet crow. I know this one is unrealistic.

Every year, my girls ask me “What do you want for your birthday Mum?” and then “Don’t say a pet crow. You can’t have one.”

I will settle for ‘my’ crows eating out of my hands. Crows are very intelligent birds and I had been making progress with the crows who come to my garden every day.

The crows take the bread that I put out and dip it in the pond. They also use the pond for bathing. All well and good …..

EXCEPT THAT ONE DAY one of the crows got stuck in the pond netting.

Thank goodness I was at home that day. I heard all sorts of commotion … not just the crows were cawing, the resident magpies were sat on the fence making alarm calls too.

I went out to rescue the crow – she (he?) was really scared and had twisted & turned so much that the netting was wrapped round the foot. I had to use scissors, hold the crow, and gently cut off the netting.

I got to hold a crow (and boy can they peck hard!). But the crow has ‘learned’ that we’re a dangerous garden and for several months, only one crow would visit. The past few weeks, the pair have started to come with their babies. However they don’t use the pond any more for bread dipping or bathing.

What’s amazing is that once you start to share your big dream with others, you find connections and dreams take on more reality. Rather than hearing ‘pushbacks’, others will share ideas and resources.

What’s your big dream?

Now it’s your turn. Now that I have shared my big dream, I would love to hear yours. Leave a comment below with your big dream. It’s time to turn it into reality.

p.s. if this has got you thinking about your big dream and how to get the inner confidence to turn it into reality, let’s talk. That’s what I’m very good at doing … helping you find that inner confidence. Whether it’s a big dream about life or a smaller dream about career or business.

A simple conversation with me might be all you need. I’ll help as much as I can in the conversation, and if you want to take it further we can talk about that too. Book your complimentary ‘big dream’ call here.

When my girls tell me they want to the rule, I encourage them. I don’t say the “Why do you want to do that? or “You won’t”. Middle Chick will be the Prime Minister, or the head of the EU or some such thing. Nothing will get in her way, and I’ll clear her path to power. Not only because she’s a woman, but because that’s what mothers should do. To do anything less would be to project my own fears and insecurities onto her. And I won’t be doing that!

And to the person who caused you to hesitate for just a moment – they’re not your people. Who cares whether they understand what you do. Just know you’re great x

Yes absolutely. Love your expression “I’ll clear her path to power.” So important for us to do that as mothers. Thank you Sarah.
