Helping ambitious women in technology manage their career with confidence and purpose

How to declutter your life to create new opportunities

Just imagine if you could create new exciting opportunities simply by taking the plunge to declutter your life.

Every other week, I ‘meet up’ with Sue Revell, my co-host for a bi-weekly podcast show On The Tipping Point. We only launched in June but already we’re getting fabulous reviews on iTunes which is very exciting.

Each show discusses a different topic and its relevance to leadership. For example, Episode 6 looked at team purpose. Whether you’re a line manager, project manager or business owner, if you want your team to deliver on your objectives, having a common purpose is critical to achieving success.

Momentum is also critical in getting past the tipping point of success! In order to build momentum in her business, Sue explained how she has been clearing the decks, letting go of anything unnecessary in order to release space for new opportunities as she launches her new leadership development programme… and the universe has responded in its own, inimitable, way!

I want some of that!

WELL …. I thought to myself, I want some of that!

Since that episode was recorded about 3 weeks ago, I have been busy decluttering. Physical things such as old files, books, baby clothes as well as things that take up time,  energy or headspace.

And guess what … WOW did the Universe listen and create new opportunities.

I thoroughly recommend taking time to declutter and free up space and time in your diary. And here’s how.

How to declutter

Every time you say “yes” to something, ask yourself “what do I need to say ‘No’ to in order to do this”. Whether that’s No to ‘me’ time, family time, client time or even wasting time on Facebook.

Take time to review everything that you do – how does this help me to progress? How does this benefit me? Who else benefits from me doing this? Who doesn’t benefit? Am I doing this because I want to or because I feel I ought to? What are you doing to be ‘nice’?

And if you’re getting stuck deciding what do, I am pretty sure that asking yourself the Cartesian questions will get you unstuck.

What can I delegate or outsource? What is filling up my time? And does it really fall into my zone of genius or is it in fact in my zone of excellence? Your zone of genius is where you do your best work and where you make the absolute best of your unique self. Whereas zone of excellence – you’re doing good stuff, excellent stuff even but it’s not your genius work.

What are you doing that drags you down? That doesn’t fill you with joy? That you find boring and mundane?

What’s taking up headspace because you have been putting it off? Maybe your accounts? That overdue bill? That report deadline is looming? Just get on with it. Stop procrastinating and just do it.

Use the very simplest of methods to review your task list: ditch, delegate or do.

What decluttering has brought me

Now I have time to create, organise and host a brand new UK Entrepreneur Excellence Challenge at the end of November. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I am SO SO SO excited at the speakers (they don’t know it yet) on our list.

You will develop your excellence in both personal leadership and business performance through a series of interviews with experts and inspirational speakers. We’ll ask them to share their secrets of excellence and success.

Now I have time to launch my new mastermind with Sue starting in January – we believe it’s going to be something unique. Business masterminds typically focus on your business and business performance. You may also experience personal growth and development as a result. Ours is different because from Day 1, you will actively direct your energies to both personal and business growth. All the most successful entrepreneurs tell us that the biggest single factor in their success is their mindset.

Now I have time to develop and nurture my City Conversations networking ‘club’ for women in the City who want to connect, collaborate and create.

What about you?

Surely it’s time for you to declutter your life and create new opportunities. Declutter your physical space, your headspace, your time and your energy and see what happens.

Leave a comment below – I’d love to hear how this inspires you and what new opportunities land in your lap as a result.
